Music expresses that which cannot be said
and on which it is impossible to be silent.
I would rather write 10,000 notes than a single letter of the alphabet. --Ludwig van Beethoven
Justin Clauser is known for his diverse skills as a guitarist but began his music career playing classical viola. He performed for several years as first chair in the Mechanicsburg School orchestra before falling in love with the guitar. It was at that time that he found his true calling as a musician.
Guitar offered him versatility as an artist that would become a signature of his sound. After years of private lessons from instructors of various styles, Justin began teaching and performing as a full time professional musician. He has worked as a composer, band member, and session musician in acts as diverse as Jazz, Blues, Prog, Funk, Rock, Folk, and even extreme Heavy Metal. He has also performed many solo recitals of classical and jazz guitar.
Continuing his education, Justin graduated with a 4.0 GPA in the Music Industry Honor Program at HACC. While attending he became a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and was the sole recipient of the 2010/2011 academic year's Ruth Cook Way Music Scholarship. His pursuits at HACC went beyond the classwork as he founded the HACC Music Club and ran it as its first President.
It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge. --Albert Einstein
As a teacher, Justin brings his diverse skills together in a way that makes sense for every student. He blends his technical knowledge of the guitar with a deep understanding of music theory. Lessons are completely personalized so each student while learning the fundamentals of music and proper technique, is doing it in a way that is both fun and applicable to their interests. Individualized lesson plans can include learning songs chosen by the student and instructor, studying method books, learning to read music, ear training and learning songs by ear, technical studies, and learning to improvise, compose, and record your own music.
Justin goes above and beyond just teaching music by striving to create opportunities for all his students. Recitals, open jams, real world gigs, and cd recordings are part of the musical education available to Justin's students. In his teaching studio, Justin has everything needed to make quality recordings of the students so they can learn how their sound is developing and share their recordings with family and friends.
Every student can look to Justin as more than just a teacher but as a partner in learning the basics of their instrument, the fundamentals of music, and in putting it all together in a meaningful way. Whether you play music as a hobby or it is your career, Justin Clauser has the knowledge, experience, and desire to help you grow into the musician you aspire to be.
I am Justin Clauser, co-owner of The Perfect 5th and teacher of guitar, bass, and ukulele. I currently offer online instruction using Skype to connect with students for weekly private lessons. Since beginning online lessons, I have witnessed great progress from my students as they learn to take ownership over their musical progress. My students and I are working harder than ever and learning more every week.
Transitioning to online lessons has been almost seamless as we continue to learn the fundamentals of our instruments and of music in general. Each student has a personalized curriculum that includes basics such as posture and technique, rhythm studies, sight reading, music theory, ear training, learning songs that are fun for them, and knowing how to find and organize notes, chords and scales on their instrument. I include music fundamentals such as melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, tone, and song form into each lesson and try to foster systemic understanding of music as a whole.
My students and I take advantage of various technologies to supplement our studies. I am able to create personalized instruction videos for students as well as providing backing tracks and drum beats for students to play along with. We even collaborate on recording songs together!
Now more than ever, we realize the importance that learning music has in our lives and I am committed to going the extra mile in providing the best learning experience for my students. Here is what a few students have to say about our online lessons:
Testimonials
“In these unprecedented times, online lessons from Justin via video conference have been fantastic. Justin seamlessly provides the same caliber of teaching online as he does in person. As a student, I could not be happier with the experience.” -Tom Santana
Through Skype, Justin has been able to project his enthusiasm and love of music right into our family room. With Justin’s help and guidance, she has tremendously improved and she looks forward to her weekly lessons! -Stephanie Bevenour
I have been working with Justin at Perfect 5th for almost one year total now. The first 11 months of my face to face lessons were simply outstanding. My knowledge and skill level improved dramatically month over month. When the pandemic hit with stay at home orders, I was concerned about continuing the lessons and potentially losing the progress that I had made. Through Justin’s thought process and strategy of implementing remote learning lessons through Skype, the quality of lessons has not skipped a beat. -Ben Sellers
I am really enjoying virtual guitar lessons with Justin! They have been very productive. I really appreciate the ability to record portions of the lesson. Those videos make it feel like I get extra lessons all week and helps prevent bad techniques from developing! I would highly recommend the virtual approach! -Paul Ackroyd
